Defining
Sat down the other day and tried to define myself. Not for a paper, a job, or anyone else, simply for myself. In doing so I found myself staring at a long list of superficial, temporary ideals I’ve picked up along the way. Ideals that were not mine to start, nor would they support when I was called on to identify myself. These were shortell ed characteristics that helped me fit in and accept...
Note to Self
It’s impossible to exist in two different worlds. At some point you need to choose one.

Not in a good space. Keeping quiet to avoid bringing everyone around me down. But on another note I can’t wait to put back on my running shoes.

Pumzi
Pumzi. Wanuri Kahui. Check out this young Kenyan film maker’s short sci-fi film. It’s currently available on Netflix under Africa First: Volume One. Definitely check it out. Kahui infuses realistic/sustainable environmental concern with a futuristic/sci-fi take, all while being centered on the idea of an African authoritarian government. Truly remarkable! For more on Kahui check out...

"Love You Papi"
“Papi, do you have everything,” my mom yelled from the base of the stairs as I lugged my duffle bag down to the front door. She picked up a weird habit of calling everyone, regardless of their gender, “papi”. My weekend home had rushed by. It was now Sunday and my mom spent most of the morning cleaning and cooking lunch. “Do you want to take some of the food I cooked with you,” she asked as I...

Next
I’m expected to know what’s next. Grad school, a job. But, I don’t. I know what I want to do eventually, but I don’t know what’s in my immediate future. I guess I will fight to finish school with honors, walk across the stage, then pray that the blank screen that I have accepted as my future post-graduation changes into an image or goal.

I see all my friends. Texting. All the damn time. People be hitting ‘em up and shit. Late night, giggly texts and shit. Long text messages and shit.
And then I look at my phone.
And it just looks back at me.
And blinks.

COUNSELLING BLOG: How to Listen to your Heart →
onlinecounsellingcollege:
1. First, quieten your rational mind as it has a tendency to hush, distort or quash the intuition of your heart.
2. Practice mindfulness. This is grounding yourself in the present moment, and being aware of all the sights, sounds and sensations that are happening in the here-and-now.
3. Go…
